The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is updating one of its undergraduate majors to offer students greater flexibility in exploring biological engineering-focused courses. Starting in August and effective for incoming students, the Bachelor of Science degree in chemical and biological engineering (CBEN) will be renamed biological engineering (BIEN).

Published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, researchers in Ankur Gupta’s lab discovered how ions move within a complex network of minuscule pores. The breakthrough could lead to the development of more efficient energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors, enabling fast charging of EVs and electronic devices.

Sanjeev Redkar (PhD ChemEngr’94) was presented with the 2024 Distinguished Engineering Alumni award for his strong commitment to giving back to his community and teaching the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs, promoting innovation along the way.

Wyatt Shields has been honored with a 2024 Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar award for his contributions to teaching and research on medical microrobots, self-propelled miniature robots that one day might deliver prescription drugs to hard-to-reach places inside the human body.

Ten graduate students and one post doctoral researcher were recognized in 2024 with Chemical and Biological Engineering Department awards.

Throughout college and in the eight years since graduation, Ben Mousseau (ChemBio’16) has felt grateful for the mentors who guided him. Now a global supply manager at Tesla, Mousseau has been giving back to CU Boulder’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (ChBE) since 2019 by mentoring students through the department’s Alumni Student Mentor Program (ASMP).

Eight graduating seniors from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering were honored with 10 Graduating Student Awards from the College of Engineering and Applied Science this year.
