Professor Ryan Hayward has witnessed the continued advancement of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering since he joined CU Boulder four years ago. Now he’s looking forward to stepping into his new role as department chair.

New major offers students flexibility in exploring biological engineering courses

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is updating one of its undergraduate majors to offer students greater flexibility in exploring biological engineering-focused courses. Starting in August and effective for incoming students, the Bachelor of Science degree in chemical and biological engineering (CBEN) will be renamed biological engineering (BIEN).

Published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, researchers in Ankur Gupta’s lab discovered how ions move within a complex network of minuscule pores. The breakthrough could lead to the development of more efficient energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors, enabling fast charging of EVs and electronic devices.

Throughout college and in the eight years since graduation, Ben Mousseau (ChemBio’16) has felt grateful for the mentors who guided him. Now a global supply manager at Tesla, Mousseau has been giving back to CU Boulder’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (ChBE) since 2019 by mentoring students through the department’s Alumni Student Mentor Program (ASMP).
