This award is established in 2024 by S. N. Nyeck, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Political Economy and Africana Studies at CU Bouler in honor of Jessica Bertram from the Department of Dance at CU Boulder for her womanist MFA thesis and performance entitled "Homecoming: Returning to Love (Of the Self and Of the Folk)".

The cash award shall be known as The Jessica Bertram Womanist Innovation and Pioneer Award (WIPA). This award will be disbursed to a graduate student of any discipline at CU Boulder who has rigorously, partially, or wholly incorporated womanist perspectives in a high quality and publishable thesis/dissertation.

To be considered, the graduate student and/or a supervisor should contact Dr. S.N. Nyeck via email at SN.Nyeck@colorado.edu in January of the graduating year with an expression of intent to participate in the selection.

The final thesis/dissertation submissions must be received no later than April 10 each year. The members of the CAAAS executive committee choose the winner of the award to be presented to the student at graduation. With the CAAAS matching grant of $500.00, the winner shall receive a total of $1000.00 cash award.
