What’s in it for me?
Being a professor is rated one of the best professions in the U.S. You have significant autonomy to choose the focus of your research and teaching.Ìý Being a business school professor is particularly attractive at a time where some states have a decreasing number of college aged students, the demand for business majors is expanding.Ìý
Compared to faculty in related fields, there is a robust job market with high salaries and substantial career flexibility market because of expanding national demand for business education.Ìý Moreover, doctoral programs in business schools provide full funding to their students, covering their tuition and providing a living stipend.
Diverse students graduating from top business PhD programs are highly sought after and are hired quickly into a tenure track faculty position, truly changing the experiences of diverse students at the colleges and universities where they are hired.
Why the emphasis on diversity?
To have truly inclusive business school programs for an increasingly diverse student body, students of color should be able to see themselves in the faculty.Ìý Nationally, only 7% of US business school faculty identify as Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic Americans, or Native American. This is only a slight increase from 10 years ago when these identity groups represented only 5% of faculty.
We see that as a problem, and conversations on campus reflect a desire for change.ÌýThe Diverse Doctorates in Business program is an effort to encourage more of the best and brightest diverse students to choose to be a part of the solution by choosing careers as business professors. Ìý
