There is an amazing program at CU Boulder with a phenomenal organization UMAS y Mecha partnered with the Center for Cultural Engagement which will allow female high school students of color the opportunity to stay for a week at CU Boulder. There is no expense charged to families. Please see the link and information below. This organization will transport students even as far as Pueblo!

Aquetza is a free, one-week summer residential program on the Campus of CU Boulder which will provide high school students with strong ties to Chicano/Latino communities from across Colorado with an interactive, academic enrichment experience focused on engaging Chican@/Latin@ youth in examining the history, literature, health science, and relevant social and political issues surrounding their cultural communities, through rigorous academic work in ethnic studies, writing, reading, and science. Through our programming, attendees will have opportunities to see themselves as scholars – as holders and producers of new and valuable knowledge – as well as a chance to develop the skills to become leaders in their communities.

Durante toda esta semana, decenas de jóvenes estudiantes latinos participaron de una “experiencia educativa transdisciplinaria” en la Universidad de Colorado (CU) en Boulder para preparase como futuros líderes de sus comunidades sobre la base de tradiciones incluyen la cultura y la historia de los nativos mesoamericanos precolombinos.“Este programa forma dirigentes comunitarios que además son pensadores críticos y que pueden compartir sus nuevos conocimientos con los miembros de las comunidades de las cuales provienen”, dijo la Dra. Kristen Davidson, directora de comunicaciones y participación de exalumnos de la Escuela de Educación de CU-Boulder.

El proyecto es un “programa gratuito de verano de capacitación y educación para líderes juveniles”, según la información provista por la mencionada universidad. Y el proyecto se llama
Aquetza, una palabra náhuatl (el lenguaje usado por indígenas del centro y del norte de México) que significa algo así como “eleva tu rostro” o “mira hacia arriba”

(literalmente, “levanta la pera”).

Los creadores del programa, Mike Domínguez (exestudiante de doctorado en CU-Boulder) y Jasón Romero (con una maestría en educación de la misma universidad), eligieron esa palabra para representar su deseo de “capacitar a jóvenes de todo origen pero con fuertes lazos con las comunidades chicanas y latinas para que desarrollen poderosas conexiones entre el ámbito académico y el progreso comunitario”.

“Es muy importante contar con una sólida tradición histórica para llegar a ser líderes. El liderazgo debe basarse en la historia de esos líderes”, afirmó Davidson.
Este año, 32 estudiantes de escuelas secundarias de varias ciudades de Colorado (Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Aurora, Cherry Creek, Pueblo, Erie y Firestone), todos ellos autoidentificados como latinos, hispanos o chicanos, asisten a clases interactivas de historia, literatura, ciencias de la salud, sociología, política, cultura y estudios étnicos.

Las clases tienen un alto nivel de exigencia en cuanto a lectura, escritura y reflexión a nivel individual y grupal. Los jóvenes además profundizan sus habilidades para realizar investigaciones académicas en sus propias comunidades y para expresarse por medio del arte.

Según Davidson, el programa es “una versión actualizada” para el siglo 21 del programa que en década de 1970 tenía la Asociación de Estudiantes México Americanos Unidos (UMAS) de CU como una manera de impulsar la llegada de jóvenes latinos a la universidad, preparándolos a la vez para una “activismo con significado” en sus comunidades.

Por eso, entra otras actividades, los jóvenes participaron de las obras del “Teatro del Oprimido” de UMAS y de sesiones de sesiones de “pedagogía crítica” a cargo de expertos de CU-Boulder.

Además, los participantes aprenden a analizar críticamente las dinámicas sociales en sus comunidades por medio de un estudio sociocultural de a rtefactos relacionados con esas comunidades, como fotografías u otros objetos.

Durante las clases, los estudiantes examinaron el significado de los artefactos que trajeron para identificar así los problemas representados por ese artefacto y para buscar “maneras imaginativas” de implementar los cambios sociales que resuelvan esos problemas

“El activismo comunitario de ese proyecto se basa en las investigaciones realizadas por los mismos participantes. Se trata de un activismo fundamentado en evidencia. Ofrecemos una experiencia de la vida académica universitaria, pero el programa es mucho más profundo que solamente eso”, explicó Davidson.
En la actualidad, el 21 por ciento de los 5,3 millones de residentes en Colorado son hispanos (casi dos de cada tres de ellos descendientes de mexicanos). Pero, según proyecciones del Departamento de Asuntos Locales de Colorado, ese porcentaje se duplicará cerca 2040, año en el que se anticipa que habrá 8 millones de personas en este estado.

Además, sólo el 9 por ciento de los casi 30.000 estudiantes de CU-Boulder son hispanos, indicando una muy baja representación de la población latina en ese centro de altos estudios. De allí, sostuvo Domínguez (el fundador de Aquetza) la necesidad de animar a más latinos para que lleguen a la universidad.

“Es inspirador ver a estudiantes de CU-Boulder y a jóvenes latinos en una actividad de pedagogía culturalmente sostenible de tal manera que construye la comunidad y convalida sus identidades”, comentó Domínguez en declaraciones preparadas.

Aquetza program empowers Latin@ & Chican@ youth from across Colorado

Thirty-two Latin@ and Chican@ Colorado high school students are immersing themselves in college life and learning July 12th-18th at the �鶹��Ƶ as part of the third annual Aquetza: Youth Leadership, Education and Community Empowerment summer program.

The free residential program provides high school students with strong ties to Latin@ and Chican@ communities with an interactive academic and community-building experience focused on engaging youth in examining the history, literature, health science and relevant social and political issues surrounding their cultural communities. This happens through rigorous academic work in ethnic studies, writing, reading and science combined with individual and group reflection on personal experiences.

In Nahuatl, the language of indigenous people of central and northern Mexico, “aquetza” roughly translates as, “lift your chin up.” This was chosen with great intention and embodies what the Aquetza summer program is all about: To empower youth of all backgrounds with strong ties to Latin@ and Chican@ communities across Colorado to develop powerful connections between academics and community progress.

Participants from Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Aurora, Cherry Creek, Pueblo, Erie and Firestone will be able to see themselves as scholars and develop the skills to become leaders in their communities, to pursue higher education and to make positive change in their worlds.

The program, co-founded and directed by Jasón Romero, Jr., a master’s student in education, and CU-Boulder doctoral alumnus Mike Domínguez, was intended to revive a summer bridge program that CU’s United Mexican-American Students Association (UMAS) led in the 1970s to bring Latin@ and Chican@ youth to campus.

The week includes transdisciplinary and collaborative learning, experiences of campus life and of meaningful sites of activism, such as UMAS activities and Teatro del Oprimido, and evening presentations. At the same time, Aquetza offers educator development through rich critical pedagogy for CU-Boulder undergraduate education students.

For example, students last year participated in a “photo voice” activity, in which they shared photos of aspects of their own communities that they perceived as positive and negative. After learning about history, political systems and systemic issues, students reexamined the problems and imagined new ways to contribute to social change.

"It was inspiring to see CU-Boulder students and youth engaged together in culturally sustaining pedagogy in a way that builds community and validates identity, while showcasing the amazing knowledge, abilities, perspectives and vision these youth have to offer," Domínguez said.

Youth participation in Aquetza is funded by CU-Boulder’s School of Education, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement (ODECE), Cultural Unity & Engagement Center (CUE), the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education, which is housed in the School of Education, and private donations.

Through July twelfth and eighteenth, The Aquetza: Youth Leadership program took thirty-two Latino and Chicano students from around the state and immersed them in a week long program at CU-Boulder. This marks the third year that CU-Boulder has been hosting the event, which was first envisioned back in the seventies by The Mexican-American Student Association (UMAS). Program directors Jason Romero Jr. and Mike Dominguez revived the summer program as a way to instill cultural pride in Latino and Chicano high school students as well as give them a look and feel into campus life.

Participants from Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Aurora, Cherry Creek, Pueblo, Erie, and Firestone engaged in academic and community-building experiences focusing on the history, literature, health and science and relevant social and political issues surrounding their cultural communities.
Over the three years The Aquetza program has had over seventy students attend the program. “The great thing about the program is that we are seeing the students go back to their high schools and startup or join activist clubs and organizations.”-Mike Dominguez.

Along with academic and community based lessons and exercises the program shows students many sides of activism, such as UMAS and Teatro del Oprimido activities and presentations.
