Pettigrew's research is in experimental archaeology, focusing on the tools and weapons of early hunter gatherers. Using replicated artifacts and modern observational equipment, Pettigrew seeks to recreate residues left by ancient hunters for comparison with the archaeological record, in order to better understand ancient hunting tactics and implications for social organization. His advisor is Douglas Bamforth.
