Congratulations, Sangbok Kim, Teaching Professor of Korean, for being selected the 2024 ASSETT Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award! This award is presented to an Arts & Sciences faculty member (of any rank) who has been nominated by their peers and/or students. Awardees have a record of excellence in teaching with technology, as well as demonstrated commitment and leadership in furthering ASSETT's mission of advancing teaching and learning within CU's College of Arts and Sciences. Their student-led committee thought his nomination best exemplified these criteria. He was nominated by a student who commented:

��I have never had a professor use technology to the extent that Professor Kim does! He utilizes many aspects of technology from shared OneDrive documents, AI, PIP Lang (which he helped develop), and many other tools to help improve learning in and outside of the classroom. These tools help us to collaborate as a class and learn more efficiently. Personally, this has helped me a lot with my learning, and I believe that his methods will also continue to improve over time and help many more students in the future.��

Thirteen previously published essays by Prof. Paul W. Kroll have been collected into a book and translated into Chinese by a group of his former students and graduates of our department. The book, titled Xunyuan yu wuma �Z�S�c��R (Tamed Kite and Dancing Horses), has been published by Nanjing University Press. It was organized and edited by Timothy Wai Keung Chan (PhD 1999, currently professor at Hong Kong Baptist University). In addition to Prof. Chan, thirteen other department MA or PhD graduates contributed to the volume, each of them translating a separate essay by Prof. Kroll. The translators are: Jinhua Jia (PhD 1999, professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University), Ping Wang (MA 2000, PhD 2006 Univ. of Washington, assoc. prof. at University of Washington), Yiyi Luo (MA 2011, PhD Princeton 2019, asst. prof. at Beijing Normal University), Yue Hong (MA 2002, PhD Harvard 2010, assoc. prof. at Beijing People's University), Kangni Huang (MA 2018, PhD candidate at Harvard), Jie Wu (MA 2003, PhD Univ. of Washington 2008, professor at Murray State University), Xiao Rao (MA 2013, PhD Stanford 2019, asst. prof. at Univ. of North Carolina, Greensboro), Qian Jia (MA 2016, PhD candidate at Stanford), Zhuming Yao (MA 2016, PhD candidate at Princeton), Xiaojing Miao (PhD 2019, research fellow at Oxford), Baiqian Bian (MA 2018, PhD candidate at Yale), Xi Zhu (MA 2013, PhD candidate at Univ. of Washington), and Heng Du (MA 2010, PhD Harvard 2018, asst. prof. at Wellesley College).

On April 25th 2022, the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations held a retirement celebration in honor of:

Chun-ling Hsu, Assistant Teaching Professor of Chinese,
Faye Kleeman, Professor of Japanese, and
Terry Kleeman, Professor of Chinese and Religious Studies.

Each of them has a long dedicated teaching, research and service at CU Boulder. The department will surely miss them, but will be wishing them the best on their new journey in life!

Emeritus Professor Paul W. Kroll has published a new book, The Poetry of Meng Haoran, in De Gruyter's Library of Chinese Humanities series. This is the first complete translation into any language of all of the poetry of Meng Haoran (689-740), one of the most famous poets of the Tang dynasty. Like other books in the series, it includes the original Chinese text, with the translation on facing pages, plus additional notes. It is also available online as an Open Access searchable file. Last fall Prof. Kroll published "At the Shores of the Sky": Asian Studies for Albert Hoffst?dt, which he and Prof. Jonathan Silk of the University of Leiden co-edited in honor of the person who has been for twenty-five years the chief acquisitions editor for Asian Studies at Brill Publishers. The book includes essays by twenty-two contributors on various aspects of Chinese, Indic, and Japanese studies, including Prof. Kroll's essay, "On Some Verses of Li Bo." Later this year a revised and expanded third edition of Prof. Kroll's Student's Dictionary of Classical and Medieval Chinese will be published by Brill.

Antje Richter, Associate Professor of Chinese, is the current president of the Early Medieval China Group. The Early Medieval China Group was established to promote the communications between scholars who focus on the Early Medieval period in East Asia. The group publishes Early Medieval China, the only English language journal devoted exclusively to academic scholarship relating to the period roughly between the end of the Han and beginning of the Tang eras. Levi Thompson, Assistant Professor of Arabic, was recently interviewed by the popular literary website ArabLit about his work translating the Syro-Palestinian poet Ramy al-Asheq, who now lives in Germany. You can read the interview by Tugrul Mende. Ever Since I Did Not Die, a book of essays translated into English by Dr. Isis Nusair and edited by Professor Thompson, will appear soon with the Arab List at Seagull Books. My Heart Became a Bomb, a book of al-Asheq��s poetry translated into English by Dr. Thompson, will come out with the University of Texas at Austin��s Center for Middle Eastern Studies Press in January 2021 and now My Heart Became a Bomb is available for purchase.

Congratulations to Mona Attwa for being selected as one of this year's winners of the Best Should Teach Gold Award for for excellence in teaching and for outstanding contributions to improving higher education at the �鶹��Ƶ. The Best Should Teach initiative was established in 1996 and is managed by the Graduate Teacher Program in coordination with the School of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School at the University of Colorado at Boulder. This year��s award committee commended Attwa for her dedication to teaching and mentoring in ALC, and her active participation in the larger teaching and learning community at CU. One student said, ��Mona encourages us to follow our dreams and gives us every tool she can in aiding our success. Arabic is a tough language but she makes learning it easy and fun.�� Another remarked that ��Mona��s attitude, positivity, energy, and passion every day without exception exemplify the Best Should Teach motto.��

The award ceremony was held on Thursday, September 12th from 6-7:30pm in the UMC ballroom. Congratulations also to our lead TAs, Alana Brack and Wenfei Wang for recieving the Best Should Teach Silver Award!
