These students are ones of over 1,000 college and university students who have been inducted into JNHS-CC since its establishment in 2007. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 in 5 semester- or 7 quarter-courses in Japanese language and must have an overall GPA of 3.0 at time of nomination. While earning his PhD in Economics at CU Boulder (Department of Economics, College of Arts and Sciences), Payne has been devoting his free time to the study of Chinese and Japanese in the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations. He has now accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the School of Economics at Peking University, arguably the most prestigious university in China. Payne is scheduled to graduate from CU in May 2022, and he will take up his new position in Beijing on September 1. We invite a broad range of research interests including, but not limited to, the following fields: Anthropology, Art and Art History, Literature, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Ethnomusicology, Film Studies, Geography, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, Theatre and Dance, Urban and Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies.</p> <p>The conference will include keynote addresses by two prominent scholars in Chinese and Japanese studies, <a href="https://eall.yale.edu/people/lucas-bender" rel="nofollow">Prof. Lucas Bender </a>(Assistant Professor of Chinese literature and thought, Dept. of East Asian Languages &amp; Literatures, Yale University) and <a href="https://religion.ucsb.edu/people/faculty/fabio-rambelli/" rel="nofollow">Prof. Fabio Rambelli</a> (Professor of Religious Studies &amp; East Asian Cultures, International Foundation Chair in Shinto Studies, Chair of Religious Studies, UCSB). Keynote speakers and University of Colorado faculty will be on hand to provide feedback to presenters throughout the conference. Kroll</a>&nbsp;has published a new book,&nbsp;<em>The Poetry of Meng Haoran</em>, in De Gruyter's Library of Chinese Humanities series. This is the first complete translation into any language of all of the poetry of Meng Haoran (689-740), one of the most famous poets of the Tang dynasty. Like other books in the series, it includes the original Chinese text, with the translation on facing pages, plus additional notes. It is also available online as an Open Access searchable file. Last fall Prof. Kroll published&nbsp;<em>"At the Shores of the Sky": Asian Studies for Albert Hoffstädt</em>, which he and Prof. Jonathan Silk of the University of Leiden co-edited in honor of the person who has been for twenty-five years the chief acquisitions editor for Asian Studies at Brill Publishers. The book includes essays by twenty-two contributors on various aspects of Chinese, Indic, and Japanese studies, including Prof. Kroll's essay, "On Some Verses of Li Bo." As far as why I chose Chinese, I figured between China's increasing global&nbsp;influence and the sheer number of people who speak Mandarin that it would be a useful language to learn."</em></p> </blockquote> <p>She started learning Chinese in high school and chose to major in Chinese at CU Boulder.
