The 36^th Colorado Japanese Speech Contest was held at Koelbel Library (5955 S. Holly St. Centennial, CO 80121) on Saturday, March 2. It is organized and sponsored by The Consulate-General of Japan in Denver and Colorado Japanese Language Education Association (CJLEA) annually.

Congratulations, Sarah Al Qallaf (Korean Minor) for receiving the Excellence Award for her outstanding Korean skills at the 2022 Online Korean Poetry Recitation Contest, held for the first time by the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles!

In this online competition, a total of 242 people (96 beginners, 100 intermediate, 46 advanced) from all over the US, including Washington, Michigan, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, and Pennsylvania as well as California participated.

Sarah Al Qallaf, who received the Excellence Award for her outstanding Korean skills in this contest, was the only recipient of the award, and received attention by reciting Baek Seok's work "Me and Natasha and the White Donkey".

When asked why she chose "Me, Natasha and the White Donkey" as the poem reciting work in an interview with Sarah, she replied, "Natasha in the poem reminded me of my mother in Kuwait.""The narrator waiting in the white snow, waiting for his beloved Natasha, overlapped with that of me missing my mother on a snowy last winter day (snow is rare in Kuwait, but common in Colorado)," she added.

In addition, she said, "Through this competition, I learned the charm of Korean poetry for the first time. When I read poetry, I tried to capture my own feelings." Sarah came to study in the United States from her hometown of Kuwait in 2020, and is currently a sophomore at �鶹��Ƶ. She is majoring in biology while studying Korean as a minor. Sarah's love for Korean goes back to her middle school. She studied Korean on her own since middle school, and started studying Korean formally at the university in the Fall semester of 2021.

Professor Sangbok Kim, who works in the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations and teaches Korean at the University, said, “I think she deserves the award. Among the students in my class, her Korean skills were excellent.” Then, he said, "In fact, she was a student who enjoyed learning more than what was taught in class. She always actively participated in class activities. Even after completing the Korean language courses, she is currently participating in the 'Korean Conversation Table' on Wednesdays in Fall 2022." He praised Sarah's great efforts to learn Korean language and culture.

Sarah, who loves Korean songs as much as Korean, won the Best Performance Award for producing a witty music video for the Asian Language Night 2021 hosted by the Department of Asian Language and Civilizations. Aside from Korean and her native language, Arabic, she can speak English, Chinese, French, Japanese, and German. When asked about her future dreams, she said, "I want to make use of my linguistic talents, and after majoring in biology at the University, I want to study at a medical school and ultimately help people around the world as a competent neurosurgeon."

The following students have been inducted into the National Collegiate Chinese Honor Society. The National Chinese Honor Society College Chapter, sponsored by the Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA (CLTA), is founded to recognize the outstanding academic achievement of college students in learning Chinese as a second language, to encourage them to continue to study Chinese after they graduate from college, and to promote the study of Chinese language, literature, and culture in the United States. Students must have enrolled in the sixth semester of the Chinese course, maintain a GPA in Chinese language and must have an overall GPA of 3.0 at time of nomination. Accepted students received an electronic certificate, and the name of each accepted student are now listed on the webpage for the National Chinese Honor Society College Chapter at the CLTA website.

The following seven students have been inducted into the Japanese National Honor Society – College Chapter (JNHS-CC). The Japanese National Honor Society recognizes and encourages achievement and excellence in the study of the Japanese language. The society is administered by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ), and membership is recognized as a national achievement. These students are ones of over 1,000 college and university students who have been inducted into JNHS-CC since its establishment in 2007. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 in 5 semester- or 7 quarter-courses in Japanese language and must have an overall GPA of 3.0 at time of nomination. Students who are nominated for membership receive Certificates of Excellence and red-and-white cords to wear at graduation, and are recognized on the AATJ website.

Congratulations to Payne Hennigan! While earning his PhD in Economics at CU Boulder (Department of Economics, College of Arts and Sciences), Payne has been devoting his free time to the study of Chinese and Japanese in the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations. He has now accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the School of Economics at Peking University, arguably the most prestigious university in China. Payne is scheduled to graduate from CU in May 2022, and he will take up his new position in Beijing on September 1. Well done, Payne!

Brandon Stover, Richard Han and other CU students learning Japanese language participated in Japanese-English Conversation Table hosted by our Japanese Language Program and Hokkaido International Foundation (HIF). The meetings were held every Thursday via Zoom and students were able to virtually meet people in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Brandon and Richard wrote essays in Japanese about their experience participating in the Conversation Table and their essays were published in Hakodate Shimbun (Hakodate Newspaper).

Congratulations to our Chinese major, Morgan Sackett, for receiving a ROTC Scholarship to study Mandarin in Kaohsiung, Taiwan at Wenzao University of Languages for eight weeks this summer through the Indiana University!

"I started learning Chinese because I fell in love with the process of learning foreign languages and enhancing my understanding of other cultures. As far as why I chose Chinese, I figured between China's increasing global influence and the sheer number of people who speak Mandarin that it would be a useful language to learn."

She started learning Chinese in high school and chose to major in Chinese at CU Boulder. She plans to use Mandarin by teaching English in either Taiwan or China and hopes to be able to translate comics in the future.

Congratulations to Lindsey Quint for being selected for Critical Language Scholarship! The CLS program is a fully funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.

Linsey majors in International Affairs and Chinese. She began studying Chinese in 6th grade and chose to continue studying Chinese at CU Boulder because she loved the academic rigor of it.

"Chinese is incredibly challenging and learning it has pushed me to grow as an individual. The professors and language instructors that I have had the privilege of learning from are another big reason why I continued studying Chinese in university. I am so grateful for the amazing classes that were offered as well as the endless support from the Asian Language and Civilization department,"

Her plan with the Critical Language Scholarship has not been set in stone yet due to COVID-19, whether the program will be held in person or virtually, but she hopes to be able to attend it in person. She will be attending graduate school and wants to eventually do research in China. The Critical Language Scholarship will support her in developing her language skills further.

The 33rd Colorado/Whyoming Japanese Speech Contest was held on Saturday, November 9th at First Baptist Church of Denver. Students from JPNS 1010 through JPNS 4110 competed for their skit/speech presentations. Our CU representatives left great results at the contest. Way to go, everyone!
