French

The graduate program in French at the 麻豆视频 offers students the opportunity to pursue their interest in literature and culture while working with faculty members who produce distinguished scholarship in a broad variety of fields. Entering students will discover a community where the life of the mind is taken seriously, where hard work is valued and where vigorous, critical inquiry is applauded.

At the MA level, students are encouraged to take courses across many fields and to become acquainted with a diversity of critical and theoretical approaches. At the PhD level, students are able to focus closely upon questions that fuel their intellectual curiosity and to make their first major statements as scholars.

The department has yearlong exchange programs in conjunction with French universities.

Financial aid for qualified MA students is available in the form of teaching assistantships, which normally include responsibility for lower-level language classes.

Financial aid for qualified PhD students is available in the form of teaching assistantships, graduate part-time instructorships and Graduate School fellowships.

Master of Arts

  • 33 credit hours
  • All MA candidates must acquire a reading knowledge of a language other than French and English.
  • Candidates must take a comprehensive exam based on a reading list in literature, culture and theory prepared by the graduate faculty. 
  • Students may earn this degree as part of the Bachelor's鈥揂ccelerated Master's (BAM) degree program, which allows currently enrolled CU Boulder undergraduate students the opportunity to earn a bachelor's and master's degree in a shorter period of time.

Doctor of Philosophy

  • 42鈥45 coursework credit hours
  • 30 dissertation credit hours
  • The PhD program in French literature consists of coursework, a comprehensive examination, a doctoral dissertation and an oral defense of the doctoral dissertation.
