Classics

The Department of Classics offers courses in language and literature, ancient history, art and archaeology, and philosophy within several programs of study. CU Classics ranks among the most vibrant programs in humanistic studies at the University of Colorado, a department in which students at every level are challenged to integrate the world of scholarship into their daily lives.

The graduate program offers master鈥檚 degrees and PhDs, with concentrations in a wide array of fields. Courses are taught by an internationally recognized faculty with particular strengths in the fields of Greek and Latin literature, archaeology and art history, and the history of Greece and Rome, including the period of late antiquity during the transition from the classical civilizations to the Middle Ages.

Master of Arts

  • 30 credit hours
  • Candidates will choose one of the following four concentrations: (1) Greek or Latin, (2) Classical Art and Archaeology, (3) Classical Antiquity or (4) Teaching of Latin. 
  • A thesis is optional. Students may earn the MA in classics through coursework alone.

Bachelor's鈥揂ccelerated Master's Degree Program

  • Students may earn this degree as part of the Bachelor鈥檚鈥揂ccelerated Master鈥檚 (BAM) degree program, which allows currently enrolled CU Boulder undergraduate students to earn a bachelor's and master's degree in a shorter period of time.

Doctor of Philosophy

  • A minimum of 42 credit hours of coursework at the 5000 level or above (excluding thesis and accelerated courses). Coursework completed in the MA program at the 麻豆视频, or up to 21 credit hours of graduate credit transferred from another institution, may be applied toward this requirement. 
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours of doctoral dissertation with no more than 10 of these credit hours in any one semester. No more than 10 dissertation credit hours may be taken preceding the semester of taking the oral comprehensive examination. Up to 10 credit hours may be taken during the semester in which the student passes the comprehensive examination.
  • Dissertation is to be completed by the end of the 10th semester in the PhD program.
