CMU/CU Boulder BS in Civil Engineering

Students living in the Grand Junction area can earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from CU Boulder through our innovative partnership with Colorado Mesa University (CMU).

Civil engineers are analytical thinkers who help design our built environment, including roads, bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers, transit systems, water treatment facilities and offshore structures. Our students become problem-solvers who meet many challenges facing society and communities, including: pollution, clean drinking water, climate change, energy and transportation needs, urban development, and community planning. The first two years of the program are taught by CMU faculty, and the second two years of engineering courses are taught by CU Boulder faculty who live permanently in Grand Junction.

  • Gain a hands-on education
  • Learn to identify and solve complex engineering problems
  • Earn a CU Boulder undergraduate degree entirely in Grand Junction

Academic Plan & Requirements

Students interested in the partnership program should apply for admission to CMU directly as a first-year or transfer student. After about two years at CMU, students then apply to CU Boulder through an expedited admissions process.

Our objectives for students in the partnership program include:

  • Successful employment in engineering, science or technology
  • Work in management or leadership roles
  • Pursuit of advanced degrees or additional educational opportunities
  • Pursuit of professional registration or certifications
  • Engagement in activities that benefit society

The CMU partnership follows a similar hands-on curriculum to CU Boulder. Students complete a yearlong senior design project their final year.
