Dear %%First Name%%,
I want to welcome you to CU Boulder this fall and let you know about a new program called Buffs One Read, where we come together as a campus to read the same book, meet new people, and share ideas. For this inaugural program, our title is American Like Me, Reflections on Life Between Cultures, by the actress America Ferrera. In this book, Ferrera has invited 31 of her friends—actors, comedians, athletes, artists, politicians and activists—to share their personal stories about growing up in a multicultural America.Ìý
Electronic copies of American Like Me will be provided to all interested first-year students at no cost to you. It won’t cost you a thing. .Ìý
Here is why I am excited about the new Buffs One Read program and why I hope you will be, too.
-
American Like Me provides us with opportunities to discuss and appreciate the different cultural experiences and backgrounds that make up our campus community.Ìý
-
By reading and discussing the same book, we can build an intellectual community and learn from each other. This is what higher education is about.
-
I am writing today with this personal invitation to you as a member of our incoming class to participate in the Buffs One Read program. Across our entire campus community, this is a special opportunity for a larger shared experience, where we will meet new people and build lasting friendships through common experiences such as orientation events, classroom discussions, and small book clubs.Ìý
You can start reading American Like Me this summer.
I will be reading this book myself and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please drop me a line at vcaa@colorado.edu.
Best regards
Russell Moore
