Dec. 14, 2020
Dear College of Music community,
Today I am announcing that John Davis will become the next dean of the College of Music effective Jan. 1, 2021.
John has been the senior associate dean of the College of Music since 2012 and served as the acting dean from July to December 2019. He directed the College of Music’s jazz program from 1999 to 2011. In these capacities, John has proven himself to be an effective listener, a strong consensus builder, and a peerless advocate for the College of Music. I look forward to his energetic and visionary leadership of the College.
John earned his bachelor’s degree in music education and performance from Metropolitan State University of Denver, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from the University of Denver and a doctor of musical arts degree in trumpet performance and pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado. He also received a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Colorado State University. John succeeds Rob Shay, who has served as dean since Aug. 2014.
At this time, I want to thank Dean Rob Shay for his service and commitment, and for leading the College of Music through a strategic planning process that culminated in the unanimous faculty approval of “The College of Music Advantage” strategic plan in 2016.
I also want to acknowledge and thank Dean Shay for his leadership in launching the $50 million music+ fundraising campaign in 2017 to help fund the initiatives in the strategic plan and the building of the 64,000 square-foot expansion to the Imig Music Building. The expansion, which opened this fall, includes new performance, rehearsal, classroom and studio spaces designed to help bring the CU College of Music’s facilities up to the level of excellence of its people and programs
Sincerely,
Russ
